Cape Town is one of the leading destinations in the world, and winning several awards and accolades on wineries, breweries, golf, and food; you certainly cannot miss a visit to Constantia Valley, a region which possesses 8 award-winning wine estates and which offers a collection of experiences such as wine tastings, craft beer tours, zip lining, biking, golfing, hiking, and festivals during the summer.
Now, when it comes to an accommodation that will help accentuate the marvels of this region there is one boutique hotel that will grant you a special visit: Glen Avon Lodge. Besides having comfortable and spacious rooms, here I enjoyed a gourmet diner and complete buffet breakfast, swam on the pool, and went out to several places nearby as Groot Constantia, La Parada, and BEAU Constantia.
If you live in Cape Town, spending a weekend at Glen Avon Lodge will be perfect to step away from the routine and relax from the hustle and bustle of the busy city life. And if you come as a tourist, I recommend you to stay here to relax while you also explore this fascinating side of Cape Town.
I stayed here on a holiday planned with Encompass Africa, travel specialists that design luxury tailor-made holiday and safari travel for guests from all over the world. Let me share with you the main characteristics of the hotel, the different kinds of rooms where you can stay, its restaurant, amenities, services, and the activities that you can do nearby.
1. Main Characteristics of Glen Avon Lodge
a. Prime Location
Only 25 min. drive from Cape Town City Center, Glen Avon Lodge is located in Constantia Valley. It is a tranquil gem which everyone should visit.
b. Sustainability
Glen Avon Lodge supports eco green initiatives to help save the environment. Some of its efforts have been:
- Add heat pumps to all the rooms to save electricity.
- Install photovoltaic cells.
- Buy eco-friendly bathroom products made locally.
- Re-cycle most of their waste and use vegetable matter for their own composting.
c. Social Responsibility
- They are part of the Soil For Life NGO project that employs people from the Hout Bay Township area and teaches the community how to grow their own vegetables.
- All their worn towels and linen are donated yearly.
d. Family owned
Glen Avon Lodge is owned and managed by the Stringer family and this was important because I felt a personal touch all around the hotel and their efforts to made the guests feel at home.
2. The Rooms
a. My Room
With 21 rooms, each of them with its own style as well as their own views. I had the chance to stay in their Deluxe Suite, which had a big king size bed, bath, shower, small kitchenette, and view of the beautifully maintained rose gardens and pool.
b. Other types of rooms
In general, all the rooms at Glen Avon Lodge have a spacious and elegant design furnished in a contemporary Cape style, with different neutral colors. All bathrooms, have modern granite and glass finishes, with heated towel rails, twin basins, a bath and a separate shower.
All rooms have air-conditioning, satellite TV, telephone, hairdryer, showers, and baths. There are 3 different kinds of rooms:
a. Double Rooms
Each room is overlooking the beautifully manicured front gardens.
b. Standard Suites
Each has a private balcony or patio and kitchenette.
c. Deluxe Suites
Each has King Size Extra Length Beds, views to the pool and kitchenette.

3. Dining
Glen Avon Lodge serves daily breakfasts and gourmet evening dinner.
a. Dinner
I arrived in the evening so after unpacking my baggage and relaxing for a while on the suite I went to enjoy dinner. There is a set menu and I can say it was delicious. For starters we had 3 different kinds of soups, the main was Norwegian salmon filet, the dessert consisted of small portions of different tarts and chocolate delicacies and the wine accompanying everything was wonderful .
Furthermore, don’t worry, if you have any dietary requirement, rest assured that Glen Avon staff will fulfill your needs. During my booking I specified I was gluten-free and every time I was served gluten-free bread.
b. Breakfast
Each morning, between 8:00 and 10:00 am buffet breakfast is served and you can enjoy it either on the dining room or on the front patio sitting on big tables overlooking the garden.
When I arrived, one friendly member of the staff served me a fruit platter and took my tea & coffee order as well as my cooked breakfast order. Then I also took a variety of treats from a full English & Continental buffet, with included freshly baked pastries, yogurt cheese, and cold meat platters, together with cereals and juices.
4. Amenities
a. Two Pools
I was very lucky because outside my suite there was an 11-meter swimming pool with a lapa area on the back and large relaxing plush loungers to sunbath while reading a book. So right after breakfast, I was able to pamper myself sunbathing and swimming in the pool.
Additionally, there was a smaller pool on, ‘The Gables’ an adjacent property that was incorporated into the hotel grounds.
b. Lounge
The perfect place to relax as the day ends would be the lounge. It has a fireplace that creates a cozy atmosphere while you read a book or work on your computer.
c. Conference center
For the corporate environment, Glen Avon Lodge has fully-equipped facilities that will cater to all business needs.
5. Service
a. Friendly Staff
Glen Avon Lodge staff was very nice and friendly and attentive and they all helped me with any request I had.
b. Free Parking
If you’re coming with your own vehicle, there is ample space in the hotel for parking.
c. Free Wi-Fi
Fast complimentary WiFi access is available throughout the resort. For me, it is very important to have fast internet because I am always working on my computer and the internet at Glen Avon Lodge was perfect to catch up on some work.
6. The Activities
Glen Avon Lodge prime Location is perfect to enjoy all the activities offered in Constantia Valley. In front of the lounge, you will find a brochure stand full of activities on offer and you can ask anyone in reception to help you book a tour.
For the wine lovers, these are some of the places that I recommend you to visit:
a. Groot Constantia
Founded in 1685, Groot Constantia Wine Estate is the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa, and I was so happy because Glen Avon Lodge staff gave me a free Visitors Route Experience. I felt like in an old fancy movie walking through the Manor House, the Cloete Cellar and the vineyard and then the wine tasting experience was marvelous.

BEAU Constantia is a boutique wine farm. You can dine either in the main restaurant, upstairs in the lounge area, or outside. I had wine an cheese pairing and it was excellent.

c. La Parada Constantia Nek
La Parada is a Spanish tapas restaurant and bar chain with different venues all across Cape Town. But my favorite venue is Constantia, you can sit outside on one of the tables and eat your tapas and wine while you get fascinated by the wonderful views of trees and nature that create a memorable experience.

c. Other Activities
