Sprachcaffe: my experience studying an English course in Malta

Sprachcaffe Malta English Course

English  |  Español  |  Deutsch

This summer I had the opportunity to study an English course in Malta for 1 month with Sprachcaffe Languages Plus; which is an association of 30 language schools around the world offering 7 different languages. It has a great experience, it was founded in 1983 in Germany.

Let me share with you the most important aspects of the course as the teachers,  classmates, the Sprachcaffe residency where I was living, and the completely awesome activities that you can do as a tourist in Malta.

1. Sprachcaffe English Course

Overall, the english course was amazing, I was able to improve my English recalling things that I’ve forgotten and also learning new words and grammar rules. Now I feel more confident while reading, writing and speaking in English.

In Malta the official languages are English and Maltese so every day you are practicing the language with your classmates, teachers, and everyone you meet; even when you are buying groceries in a supermarket, eating in a restaurant or partying in a club, you always have to speak in English.

a. Intensive English course

Sprachcaffe offers several types of courses:

  • Standard or intensive course
  • Standard or intensive business course
  • One to one
  • FCE, CAE exam preparation
  • IELTS exam preparation

I took the intensive English course so I had clases in the morning then lunch and finally more clases in the afternoon. I was lucky because in the afternoon I was able to take the business english course so I was also improving my skills to have a better English at work.

b. The  Teachers

I had different teachers in the morning and in the afternoon and they were all awesome. I was truly happy to go to classes… and this is something rare, I haven’t been a student since university but I remember I felt bored a lot of time and this is something that wont happen in Sprachcaffe.

The teachers are highly motivated native speakers with bast experience. Their personality, sense of humor, energy and sensitivity all play important parts in the success of the class. Also, they are always willing to help you and share insider tips on local events and attractions. Thank you very much Chris, Elen, Mandy and Thomas!

c. My classmates

I loved that in Sprachcaffe you are able to find people from all around the world and from all ages. Particularly, when I was there I met a lot of students from Brazil, Japan, and Poland, but all the continents were represented and we all had a lot of fun together!

2. Accommodation

You can choose between staying in the Sprachcaffe residency or finding your own accommodation.

In my case I was staying in the residency and I loved it becasuse every morning I woke up and only had to go downstairs and walk 1 minute to get to my classroom.

The school is very pretty, it has a big pool in the middle (yes, at it sounds… you are taking classes and you have the pool just outside, so when you finish you can go straight to swim!)

a. The Rooms

Depending on your budget you can choose between these options:

  • Host Family, double room
  • Host Family, single room
  • Standard Apartment, Double Room
  • Standard Apartment, Single Room
  • Comfort Apartment, Double Room
  • Comfort Apartment, Single Room
  • Hotel, Single Room
  • Studio, Double Room
  • Studio, Single Room
  • Hotel, Double Room

In my case I was staying at a standard apartment, single room and it was great. I had my own room and there were other girls living in the apartment so we shared the kitchen and two bathrooms. This was great because my roomies were very nice and we became great friends.

b. The Bistro

The bistro offers a wide variety of meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it also has a bar with a big TV where you can watch sports or party.

c. The Reception

The reception is open 24/7 so in case you need anything you will always find someone to help you.

d. The Vibe

Everyone is so friendly and outgoing, you won’t find yourself bored any time. On the contrary people are always inviting you to go out and also several parties take place in the residency (as the Caipirihna party organized by Brazilians!)

3. School Location

a. Connectivity

Sprachcaffe’s location is amazing. It’s located in Pembroke and it’s on a walking distance to several bus stops so you can easily go wherever you want at a low cost, you can use Google maps to plan the route you should take to your destination but remember that transport in Malta is not very efficient so generally the buses will arrive late; you should leave the school with enough time if you want to be on time in your destination.

Also, you can take an e-cab to move around (there’s no UBER but it works similarly by calling by phone and booking private taxis).

b. Sport activities

There’s a volleyball court inside the school and also a football court 2 blocks away. All the time the guys were organizing football matches and also I had fun playing volleyball in the pool.

c. Greens Supermarket

Four blocks away from the school you’ll find Greens Supermarket. You can buy all your groceries there and cook in your room. Also, in front of it there’s an ATM where you can withdraw money with no commission (at least I got the best rates for my Mexican bank).

d. Night life

If you want to party, Paceville is the perfect place! It’s on a walking distance to Sprachcaffe and it’s a place full of nightclubs, bars, restaurnats and malls where you’ll be able to party from Monday to Sunday.

I remember I arrived just on my birthday (on Monday) and that day I partied with my classmates (which I also met that day… people are very friendly and with a great attitude to go out and explore Malta).

Some of my favorite nightclubs were:
