1. My Experience on the “KoelnGalopp Family Race Day – BBAG Auction Race”
On August 2nd, I headed to the Familien-Renntag – BBAG Auktionsrennen with my husband, our baby, and a friend—and let me tell you, it was one of those wholesome, unexpectedly fun days that you don’t forget. We arrived right around 10:30 AM and stayed until 3 PM, soaking up the sun, the races, and the lively atmosphere. There was a bit of rain but it didn’t affect the day.
We had a 4-person box at the main tribune that was perfectly located, offering a fantastic view of the track and quick access to food and drinks (crucial when you’re toting a baby and craving fries). The setup was super comfortable.
We watched all eight races—yes, eight!—and placed bets on most of them. We won a few, lost a few more, but it was all part of the thrill. The food was delicious and the Kölsch and wine refreshing.

2. What is KoelnGalopp?
Brief History
KoelnGalopp is Cologne’s iconic horse racing venue, officially known as Rennbahn Weidenpesch. It’s been around since 1897, making it one of Germany’s oldest racecourses. Over the decades, it has hosted countless national and international racing events and remains a cherished tradition for locals.
Why It’s Popular with Locals and Tourists
It’s the perfect blend of sport, entertainment, and open-air leisure. Locals love it for its family-friendly atmosphere and big race days, while tourists enjoy the novelty of seeing a different side of Cologne—less cathedral, more champagne and binoculars.

3. Upcoming Races & Seasonal Highlights
Key Races Through the Year
The racing season typically runs from April to November, with events sprinkled throughout spring, summer, and early autumn. Each race day has its own theme and energy.
Where to Check the Schedule
You can always find the latest event calendar on koeln-galopp.de, including info on race types, featured horses, and ticketing.
Special Event Days
Some of the standout themed days include:
Familien-Renntage (Family Days)
Ladies Day (hats encouraged!)
BBAG Auction Races (where the horses are up for sale)
These are great for different audiences—from fashion lovers to families and even first-time race-goers.

4. Location and How to Get There
Location
KoelnGalopp takes place at the Rennbahn Weidenpesch, located in the northern part of Cologne.
Public Transport
It’s super easy to reach by tram. Just hop on line 12 or 15 and get off at Scheibenstraße or line 16 and get off at Sebastianstraße stop. From there it’s a short walk to the entrance.
Parking
If you prefer to drive, there’s parking on-site for 3 EUR. But fair warning: it fills up fast on big race days, so come early or go public.

5. Food Options at the horse races
There are plenty of food stalls around the venue. Expect German classics like bratwurst, pretzels, and schnitzel sandwiches, as well as international options like fries, crepes, waffles and even veggie-friendly bites.
Food and drinks prices
Prices are reasonable for an event: drinks like water or soft drinks start around €3, beer is about €4.50, and wine ranges between €4.50 to €7, depending on the type and size. Sausages and fries go for €5–7, and more complete meals range from €8 to €12.
Kid-Approved Food
There are also ice cream stands and juice stalls to keep the little ones happy.

6. Placing a Bet: A Beginner’s Guide
Whether you’re feeling lucky or just want to add a little thrill to the races, betting is part of the experience at KoelnGalopp — and it’s easier than it sounds.
a. How It Works
There are a few basic ways to bet:
Win: Your horse must finish 1st.
Place: Your horse must finish 1st or 2nd (sometimes 3rd, depending on the number of horses).
You can also place combi bets like predicting the exact order of the top 2 or 3 horses — more complex, but higher payouts!
👉 The minimum stake is usually €2 for Win, Place, Double, and Place Twin bets; and €0.50 for Treble and Four-Way bets.
b. Betting via App: Wettstar
If you’re like me and prefer tapping a screen over standing in line, you’ll want to use the Wettstar app. Here’s how it works:
Download the app (search for “Wettstar” in the App Store or Google Play).
Register and load money onto your account via credit card, PayPal, direct debit, or bank transfer.
Once your account is topped up, you can bet directly from your phone and see live updates of your winnings and losses.
It’s super convenient, especially if you’re moving around or chilling in your box seat.
c. Betting Counters
Prefer a bit more guidance? You’ll find betting counters across the venue. Staff are friendly and happy to help first-timers. Just tell them what race you’re betting on, which horse, and the type of bet (Win or Place), and they’ll do the rest. If you win, bring your printed ticket back to the counter to collect your payout.

8. Tickets and Areas at Köln-Galopp
There are several ticket options depending on the kind of experience you want — from general entry to more premium views and comfort.
a. Stehplatz / Tribune II (General Admission)
This is the most affordable way to enjoy the races and still get great views. You’ll be standing on the grass in front of the race track or sitting on the benches on Tribune II.
Price: Usually around €12 online, slightly more at the venue.
Best for: First-timers, families on a budget, or anyone who wants to casually enjoy the event.
b. Haupttribüne (Main Grandstand)
This is the covered seating area in the main grandstand with a better view of the finish line. Seats are more comfortable, and you’re sheltered in case of sun or rain.
Price: Generally €18 to €25, depending on the event.
Best for: Those who want reserved seats with a direct view of the races.
c. Hippodrom
This is the premium option. You’ll get access to indoor and outdoor areas, catering, and often a livelier, more exclusive atmosphere. Great for groups or those looking for a more upscale day at the races.
Price: Usually starts around €45 to €60, sometimes higher on big event days.
Best for: Social events, company outings, or making the day extra special.

My experience
We had a 4-person box in the Haupttribüne, and honestly, it was perfect. Super comfortable seating, a fantastic view of the track, and when it rained for a bit—no problem—we stayed dry and cozy. The atmosphere from up there was still lively, but a bit more relaxed than the general admission area.

8. What to Wear: Race Day Outfits
Dress Code
KoelnGalopp says it best: “We don’t have a specific dress code. Everyone is welcome to dress however they feel most comfortable.” You’ll see everything from linen suits and sundresses to jeans and t-shirts. That said, some events—like Ladies Day—might inspire fancier outfits, so it never hurts to check ahead.
What I Wore
I went all white with a vest and trousers, paired with sandals. My advice? Skip the heels—the venue has a mix of pavement, small rocks, and grassy areas. Sure, you can stick to the paved paths, but then you’ll miss out on getting closer to the horses or exploring some of the more scenic spots.

9. Bringing the Family: Kids at KoelnGalopp
Family Facilities
There are bouncy castles, pony rides, face painting, and even an area for petting animals on Family Race Days.
Why It’s Great for Kids
It’s outdoors, there’s space to run around, and there are enough distractions between races to keep the little ones entertained. Also dogs are welcome throughout the visitor area, provided they are kept on a leash.
Accessibility
The venue is stroller-friendly, with wide paths and accessible bathrooms.

10. Practical Info
Opening Times: Gates usually open around 10:30 AM, with the first race starting around 1:00 PM.
