Llandudno Beach is definitely a must-see when you come to Cape Town. Surrounded by granite boulders and mountains, this beach is an amazing place to spend the whole day. It is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in the city.
It’s located on an exclusive neighborhood, one of the most expensive in South Africa.
The beach is a wonderful place, suitable for all types of recreation. You can find children running, family events, surfers and dogs playing. It is truly an experience for everyone.
Llandundo Beach is only about 18 km from the city center of Cape Town. On your way there you will have a lovely scenic drive over Suikerbossie Hill from Hout Bay or over Victoria Road from Camps Bay.
The neighborhood is a residential area, meaning that there are not many shops or other commercial activities around.
2. How to get there?
By car: you can take an UBER and easily get to Llandudno Beach. It’s located 20 to 30 minutes away from Cape Town’s City center and it’ll cost you around 150 ZAR = 13 USD.
*If you take your own car keep in mind that the parking lot is very small and you may have to find a place on the surrounding streets or wait a long time till there’s space available.
By bus: you can buy a MyCity bus card and you’ll be able to get there in around 30 minutes from the city center. You should go down in “Llandudno” bus stop.
*Unfortunately there’s a long way to walk to the beach from the bus stop.
3. Llandudno Beach
The name Llandudno originates from a Welsh town has the same name. It is surrounded on one side by the Twelve Apostles Mountains and on the other side by the Lions’s head and the Karbonkelberg Moutain range.
It is really photogenic from all angles as it is surrounded by breathtaking mountains and green scenery. The beach itself is a beautiful tropical paradise with blue waters and beautiful white sand.
If you walk in north direction you’ll find another smaller beach surrounded by big boulders, it’s perfect to take pictures!
Llandudno must be one of Cape Town’s most famous surfing spots but swimming can be difficult as the water can be pretty rough and cold as it is part of the Atlantic Ocean.
*There are several lifeguards during the summer period operated by the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving club.
It is in addition a great spot for water and beach sports, such as volleyball, surfing, beach rugby and beach bates.
Make a picnic
The surroundings do not offer restaurants or bars, you’ll only find some cold drinks/ice cream vendors. So bringing your own water and food for a nice picnic is essential.
Llandudno is perfect for sunbathers. The vast beach offers plenty of tanning spots and you can also find some shade behind the big rocks.
There are also lying-chairs and umbrellas, which you can rent for affordable prices.
The beach is very child friendly, blow up a beach ball and let your kids play across the soft white sand.
Bring your dog
For dog lovers, this place is perfect, dogs are allowed to be at the beach but only from 18:00 hrs to 9:00 hrs.
