Canal Walk: the 3rd largest shopping centre in Africa

Canal Walk is the third largest shopping center in Africa after the Gateway Centre in Durban and the Sandton City Complex in Johannesburg. It is located in Cape Town, South Africa and it has over 400 stores, numerous restaurants, 7000 parking bays, 20 cinemas and a game arcade.

It opened its doors in 2000 and was built in a “Cape Venetian Architecture” around a canal. Canal Walk forms the heart of Cape Towns precinct Century City that is a mixed-use development which includes office blocks and residential areas.

Besides the shopping mall you can also visit Intaka Island, a bird sanctuary, Century Karting, an indoor karting venue and Ratanga Junction, a theme park where you can have a day of excitement. I will explain you all of them in the next sections.

1. Canal Walk Shopping Centre

Canal Walk offers innumerable choices for your entertainment; over 400 stores, 50 different places to eat, a wellness center and a variety of activities.

You will find a lot of brands like Hugo Boss, Fossil, Mango, Nike, Diesel, Adidas, Guess, H&M, Polo, Lacoste, and Levi’s to name a few.

The giant foodcourt surrounds an entertainment center that especially children love. There are also two big screens where you can regularly watch important sport matches.

Canal Walk is located in Century City, a suburb of Cape Town. It is in the north-east of the city center and about 35 minutes far away.

Open 9:00 am to 9:00 pm

How to get there

  • By Bus: It will take you about an hour from Adderley bus stop to Canal Walk. You should go down on ‘Canal Walk South’ stop.
  • By UBER/Taxify: It will take about 30 minutes from the city center. Uber cost is around 110 ZAR = 9.5 USD.

2. Intaka Island

At the center of Century City is Intaka Island (Intaka= bird in Xhosa) a majestic 16 ha bird sanctuary and wetland.

At Intaka Island you can see sprawling wetlands, rare and popular birds and exquisite flora. It is a perfect place to relax, stroll, get in touch with nature and to escape from the routine.

Prices

  • Adult: 20 ZAR = 2 USD, with boat ride: 60 ZAR = 5 USD
  • Kids & pensioners: 12 ZAR = 1 USD, with boat ride: 50 ZAR = 4 USD

Opening hours

  • 7:30 till 19:00 hrs. in summer (October- April)
  • 7:30 till 17:30 hrs. in winter (May – September)

Location

Intaka Island is very close to Canal Walk. It is only a 5 minute ride with car and taking an UBER costs around 25 ZAR = 2 USD

3. Century Karting

Century Karting is an indoor karting venue. Here you can get an adrenaline rush by racing a high-tech Kart around a fully race-tarred 310 meter track in the parking lot of Canal Walk Mall.

There are also some games and pool tables, refreshments, fast food and a shop and at the venue.

Prices

  • 6 minutes (+- 15 laps): 160 ZAR = 14 USD
  • 11 minutes (+- 30 laps): 220 ZAR = 19 USD
  • 15 minutes (+- 45 laps): 260 ZAR = 22 USD
  • 30 minutes (+- 90 laps): 450 ZAR = 39 USD

Opening hours

Everyday from 9:00 till 22:00 hrs.

Location

It is located in the parking lot of the shopping center, only 500 meters away. So you can get there by foot in about 6 minutes.

4. Ratanga Junction

Ratanga Junction is a theme park where you can have a day of excitement on the more than 24 rides it has. It offers something for everyone – junior fun rides for kids, boat and train trips for the family and some thrill rides for adrenaline junkies.

Make sure to visit soon because it’s closing in 2018 (check on the website).

  • Over 1.3 m tall: 179 ZAR = 15 USD
  • Below 1.3 m tall: 95 ZAR = 8 USD

Opening hours

Only open to public on Saturdays from 10:00 till 17:00 hrs.

Location

It is very close to the shopping center, only 700 meters away. So you can get there by foot in about 8 minutes. Its close to the ‘Canal Walk South’ bus station.
