Rhodes Scholars are required to pursue studies at Oxford University for a duration of two years; this isn’t a single-year scholarship. Those opting to pursue a DPhil (PhD) have the opportunity to extend their scholarship for a third year with full support.
7. Award (tuition, accommodation and more)
The Rhodes Scholarship covers:
- Oxford University course fees.
- Annual stipend of around £19,000 per annum (around £1,600 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation.
- The fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford.
- The fee for a student visa.
- The associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), which enables international students to access the UK’s National Health Service.
- Two economy class flights – to and from the UK – for the beginning and end of studies in Oxford.
- Upon reaching Oxford, scholars are granted a settling-in allowance. Additionally, scholars pursuing a second course at Oxford will receive aid for visa renewal fees and assistance with further applications for the Imternational Health Surcharge (IHS).

- East Africa (1 Scholarship) Covering Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi

b. Age
- you must be aged 18-23 or
- for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual, you must be under the age of 27.
c. Academic Achievement
Candidates will have a higher chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have:
- A First Class Honours Degree or equivalent, or,
- A GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher
d. English Language Criteria
- You do not need to provide evidence of English language proficiency if you meet one of the following criteria:
- Your first language is English and you have always been a citizen of and primarily resident in a majority English-speaking country recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI); or
- You are a current Oxford student applying for readmission.
- For each course, the University requires either a standard or higher level of ability in English. Each course page states the required level for that course.
