In 2013 I participated in the summer academy Waves of Democracy in Sønderborg, Denmark. Here students from all around Europe gathered to address challenges in culture and politics and discuss steps towards their solution. Let me share with you my experience as well as the application process, and how to participate in other study programs around the world.
1. What is Waves of Democracy?
a. The Summer Academy
The International Summer Academy welcomes young people from the region, from other European countries and abroad. It is a platform for dialogue, intercultural exchange and networking. In my experience it was amazing the amount of knowledge I acquired from the program as well as from the participants; it was full of clever people with different backgrounds contributing each one in a particular way to the dynamic conversations and activities that we had.
b. Activities
Workshops
The main topics discussed were Environment and Sustainability, Migration and Mobility, History and Memory and Entrepreneurship.
Cultural visits
The program covered a wide range of activities as visits to museums, history centers, and universities between others.
Creativity and performance
We were able to share our cultures making presentations about our countries.
Interaction with the city
We interacted directly with people from Sønderborg getting to know their opinions.
c. Free Time
On the evenings after the program activities finished, we were able to choose to do whatever we wanted. Usually we chose to chill together by the dock to get to know each other better.
d. What will you gain by participating?
- Make friends from all over Europe
- Participate in high-level interesting debates with smart people
- Obtain knowledge and skills in different areas
- Practice and improve your english skills
- A diploma of participation
2. Additional information
a. Accommodation
We were staying in a fortress and attending to the workshops and other activities in the University of Southern Denmark.
b. Food
Food was varied and delicious. It was provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the University of Southern Denmark as well as local restaurants.
c. Transport
Almost all the activities were held locally so no transport was needed and there was also a transportation allowance provided to get to Sønderborg.
d. Duration
1 week
e. Participation fee
None

Sounds like such an amazing experience, one that reminds me of my experience as a student part of the People to People program offered in the United States where students in high school are selected to represent the United States as ambassadors. The activities, cultural experiences, and studies you discuss in your program are very similar to what I got to experience across four different countries in Europe! Would love to do it all over again!
